Like a pack of hyenas
They laugh
High and maniacally
As they circle
Snarling savagely
Their numbers giving them strength
We are trapped
By their sense of power
Heartlessly, they shred us

Janie Tormanen
Janie Tormanen attends the University of Minnesota Crookston where she is pursuing a Communications major and a Writing minor. She also is on the women’s basketball team and works as a writing tutor on campus. Her poetry is inspired by her personal emotions and experiences and enables her to look at the world through a lens of poetry and language.
Upcoming Projects: Janie collaborated with fellow student and composer, Caleb Mendez, to transform her poem “Why? You.” into a song. The song is debuting on May 1, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. by the University of Minnesota Crookston choir on campus.
