ode to icarus

Liahm Blank

to reach far greater heights than other men

leaves feat at feet of ic’rus before flight,

yet higher must man’s glory climb again

to satisfy his ego’s appetite.

his prideful wings doth fly above the rest

when lust for self removes the ground below.

as dignity becomes his one request,

he’ll soon reap seeds of shame he once did sow.

man jumps from cliff of looming ambition

to fly with ic’rus, hand-in-hand ascent.

though soaring higher is his one mission,

the sun’s shy rays doth force his proud wings bent.

a fall to modest waves destroys his throne—

above or under is man more alone?
