don’t touch the glass

Sofia Marie Jarski

the elephant murals listen to

shattering glass

our screaming voices

my ring on the counter

your keys dropped on the floor

they wonder what has happened here

to us and they are not the only ones

if we live in a museum

the exhibits are bursting to life

crawling from cages

your wild heart taking flight

i should leave it to the vultures

always craving leftovers

i should’ve let it stay

in that airless bulletproof display

if this house is a museum

something priceless has been broken

but this house was first a home

watch how fast we burn

oh, admission gone stale

ashes on the dining room table

peacock vases straining their necks to look

and the keys on the floorboards

cracked wide open

the curators won’t be pleased

but people will still gather round

as people always do

touch the glass and

cause a scene

fingerprints on our walls

my misery at five dollars a pop

the ghosts of these exhibits

still wander these halls
