Remnants

Alex Winters / POETRY

The currents left us for good this time,

Dissolving the days that bridged

Those distant shores

Where I followed your silhouettes.

Doubts fold beneath the floorboards

And call out with each step,

I’ll be in the way

Sifting through the wreckage

Close to you,

No matter where I stand.

The cool autumn light

Still brands your signatures

On the veins of each crackling leaf.

When the day finally comes

To live again, waste

What drifts apart from love

And gather the roving echoes ahead.
